Metairie is a huge area. Basically all of Jefferson Parish on the east bank of the river that is not part of a town. Some parts are nicer than others. Personally, I liked living in Metairie. It's just busy enough to make you feel like you are in a city, but it's mostly suburban and safe. There are lots of parks and places to run. All of the news you hear about murders and such in New Orleans does not carry-over to Metairie. In fact, you never really ever need to go into New Orleans.
I can't say there is no crime in Metairie. There are places you should not really feel safe, like Fat City. There are also a lot of problems with migrant workers who have descended upon the city to do construction work. Though, most problem areas are in the neighboring town of Kenner.
If the residence is in Old Metairie, the area running along Metairie Road, you would absolutely love it. I lived in that area and NEVER left it for almost anything.
Of course, I don't know what you like and what you don't, but I wouldn't have a problem living there.

well i live in New Orleans so i wouldnt know, but i do like metairie its nice (eating, movies, local music...) some friends live there, they like it. Metairies great because everything is there, i rather the mom and pop shops of New Orleans, but if youre not used to that Metairie has malls, movies, restaurants, hospitals, bars, groceries... all fairly close.

I love New Orleans.. and Metairie.. Great cities.. i go there every weekend for entertainment... but i would never consider living there.. i live in a smaller town 30min north of Metaire.. and its nice to come home with less traffic and chaos

I live in New Orleans and I have to go to Metairie for everything. It's very convenient.
