This is not just a male dog problem all dogs have anal glands some dogs express them when they are scared or excited, This is not missed by most people because of the extremely foul odor. Dogs sometimes also "scoot" across the floor because the glands are full. Your local groomer or vet can express them usually this costs around 10 bucks, but if your dog isn't showing any signs that this is bothering him or you don't notice him expressing when he's scared there is no reason to have them expressed.

Dogs that go into defense or "fight" mode will empty those glands. But if your dog is suppressed they don't express. Small breeds are usually always getting loaded up. I know it can cause the dogs ears to itch and perhaps get an ear infection. I know the dog may scoot along on his hiney.

It is not hard to help your dog out if you have the stomach for it. You can express them by putting on a pair of rubber gloves. Right inside the anus you will go to 4 o clock and 8 o clock and you can feel the glands on either side.. press to express and be ready to catch the fall out..

It can be unpleasant smelling and usually very runny.. be ready to catch... not kidding.. hahaha

OR you can let your vet do it.

GOOD LUCK

well to start off with you should neuter your male dog for many reasons. yes intact male dogs, wether bred or not they can devolop testicular and prostate tumors and cancer. they also are at a high risk for anal fistulas and tumors. plus male dogs are more likely to run off and be hit by a car and get into deadly fights when chasing the scent of a female in heat from miles away. as for your question.........it's anal gland expression and anal fistulas. and one doesn't cause the other. anal glad expression and your are correct is where the gland inside the anus does not empty completely and the vet or groomer (or yourself if you're like some people on here, but i'm thinking NO) place a finger inside of the anus and gently apply pressure and sorta milk the continents out of the gland. there are two of them one on each side. anal or perianal fistulas are ulcers that occur around and in the anus and are very painful and drain infected matter. it is most common in german shepherds but not specifically. but the best thing you can do is have your dog neutered for both of your sakes. but neutering won't stop him from needing his anal glands expressed if he doesn't empty them on his own when stool passes through. but personally this is best done by a professional, as you can cause damage if you don't know what you're doing. plus not many dogs will allow their owners to do this at home and well i just don't want to stick my finger in my dog's anus. good luck.
