I see you are looking at the working lines. Choose a shepherd. That is one of your best over all dogs.

If you choose a working line dog then you will have to spend time with it doing some type of training or activity. You are 13.. schutzhund would be a good avenue for you .. that includes tracking, obedience & agility and protection.

GOOD LUCK
you can take a look at my sites as I am a handler/trainer

I would get LAb mixed dogs. Lab dogs are the most loving of the breeds. I wouldn't go all out for a pure breed because they have so many health issues no matter what dog you choose. A mixed breed dog will not have tendencies for hip problems such as in the lab dog breed. I have seen a labordoodle was the sweetes thing I ever meet. Well anyways. I would also like to suggets since your so active that a collie is another good dog. What ever you do take care to make sure this dog is an inside dog NOT outside. The dog is part of the family or pack not to be thrown to the weather!!! digs gaurd no matter what thier size. M friends have a chihuahuah... you can't tell me that thing isnt protective!! =) Anyways good luck to you on getting a new family member and good luck

First, your parents need to be the ones that really make the decision to get a dog and what type but usually mixed breed, mutts, are the best temperament and the healthiest. Unless you are willing to spend the time and money to train a dog as a guard dog, all you need is a dog to bark and let you know there may be an intruder. The humans are the ones who will really protect your home.

I do personally love Doberman Pinschers though. They are great family dogs but must be raised with the family and not left out doors.

Rotts get pretty big, and no guarantee on personality. Labs make great family pets and love kids and adults. Dobs can be sweet, but you need to get good training with all of these breeds to overcome any aggression common to the guardog part of the breed.

Labs are great family dogs. Go to your local shelter, there a lot of homeless pets. If you want a pure bred, check with your local kennel clubs or area vets for reputable breeders. Make sure you at least meet the mother, to analyze her temperament. The father or sire may or may not be available to meet, but you should be able to contact the owner and get any necessary information. With any of the dogs mentioned, the parents should be OFA certified-meaning that their hips are x-rayed and the x-ray is analyzed for hip displasia-and the parents are certified as having good hips. If the certification is not available run-don't walk from the breeder. Don't take their word-ask to see the certification. A puppy with OFA certified parents is going to cost more money, but in the end it is well worth it. Hip displasia is expensive to treat, not to mention painful for the dog.

Weimeraners aren't really known to be protective but they are EXTREMELY intelligent. Labs definately aren't protective at all. Actually I'd tell you to only get a lab if you can take a dog that constantly is hyper and needs to play. They're like kids for a very long time. Rottweilers are wonderful protective dogs and aren't as mean as people think they are. They can be very loving. Dobermans are equally protective but a little more mean. They aren't known to cuddle up to you.

Rottweiler if you want equal protection and love.
Lab if you just want a hyper, active dog.

For you a lab would so best because it would make an easier first dog.
The dogs you selected require a lot of activity. You are going to have to look at the pros and cons of each breed and go to the breed club site for more info. Club sites offer info on the breed, how to select a dog/breeder, and a whole bunch of stuff. Clubs regulate the breed.

Boxers are good guard dogs, and great family dogs. They have a bad reputation of being ill mannered, but with a great owner they will make great dogs!
