In NJ, it means that the license has been replaced. Whether it has been renewed, or a duplicate issued or a change on the original (address or something) or an endorsement added like a boat or motorcycle. Some places will take it as an ID, but usually will ask for something else to verify who you are. Most bars will not take it because they know what the hole means. Police will definitely not take it as a valid license. You may get away with stores using a check but not always. Pretty much that hole the DMV punched voids the license and it is no longer a legal form of identification, because there is another valid one out there.

Depends on if someone wants to take it or not. I'm willing to be the hole was punched over the year of the expiration date effectively making your license expired. Some places will accept an expired license for ID other will not.

Yes. The hole is punched as an indicator of something. Cops and the like will know what this means, but it is still considered a valid form of ID, until it expires.

The whole punch is an indicator of an expired license, no matter what the date it. The DMV punches that hole when you receive your new license. Most policemen know this.

Sure, you can use it as a photo ID, but if you get carded at bars I don't think bartenders will allow you to use it. They might think it was an expired one that a friend gave you (happened to me!) :o)

And yeah, for sure it won't work if you get pulled over.
