OK...I know this is a silly question but...here's the scoop: I take him out several times a day for walks and a fun run back to the house, he is always leashed because there is traffic nearby, he naturally sniffs out "food" specifically any bones (people that live in the area are gross and leave chicken wings/bones thrown on the grass & bushes). During the day I can easily avoid these but at night it's hard to see and he's so freaking quick that he has it in his mouth before I know it. My question is #1- Is it going to serious harm to him to eat one of these bones? #2- How do I get him to drop it? (He'd rather die than drop it) I've tried obedience classes and he's just so stubborn that he doesn't respond. Please don't respond if you're going to say anything other than being HELPFUL..no meanies!

Obedience training is the best way. Since he won't drop it, carry something desirable to him in your pocket - a treat, or a handful of food. When he picks up the bone, offer him his food instead.

It could cause him harm if the chicken on the bone wasn't cooked thoroughly, and he pick up e.coli. Also, he could get sick trying to digest bone fragment. Eating one now and then shouldn't hurt him too much, though. Just try to always have another option for him, than bones.

Maybe try carrying a hot dog with you, when he picks up a bone get him to smell the hot dog, hopefully he will dirp the bone, they you can give him the hot dog as a teat. If they are chicken bones they can hurt the dog.

good luck

I think you should try obedience training. They might be able to teach you techniques to keep him reined in and closer to you so that he doesn't have a chance to sniff out things you don't want him to eat. They also might have ideas about keeping him from eating anything he finds.

You can't get him to stop picking them up. He's either greedy or controlling on the low ( Alpha dog in his pack). You're just going to have to grab it from him; pry his mouth open and snatch it. I went through this all my dogs. If he tries to bite you then he's 'testing' you; aka he's tesing you, he's really trying to be the alpha. Only obedience will fix that.

go buy him one of those bones that are flavored at a store maybe he will be so occupied with that and he'll forget about going out and finding real bones

Yes, it could potentially be dangerous. I would suggest putting a muzzle on him at night. It doesnt hurt and would stop this activity.
