I am crate training her and have had good success. I also use a bell which she rings when she needs to go outside. I am consistent with her feeding and walking schedule. But lately, mainly in the evenings, she will not poop, so at 4 in the morning she starts to whine and I have to get up and let her out. I have done a lot of research and reading, but I don't know what to do. I know she has to go, but she wont. Any suggestions?? I am really starting to lose my patience!

Wow, how smart is your puppy to ring a bell when she needs to go!!!

I tend to agree with Xena - in that you may want to have her vet checked just to be sure there isn't any other reason why she might be having trouble. If it hurt, for any reason, when she goes potty, then she would try to hold it. By the middle of the night, her need to go potty would outweigh her discomfort. Sometimes, even in young dogs/puppies, they can get anal gland problems and that is painful/uncomfortable for them. A vet can express the glands for your puppy and/or give your puppy medicine if necessary to clear things up if there is an infection.

Otherwise, I suggest that after you feed your puppy, take a few minutes to play with her... perhaps "tug of war with a sock or toy", or fetch - if she's a bigger puppy - then after 5 minutes (or sometimes less), take her out to go. Go outside with her (if you don't already) for a while to keep her focused - it is possible that she is getting distracted (finding more interesting things to see and do) and not "getting down to business".

Most puppies will choose 4 am to do the deed. If you are crate training then take her out, tell her "the word or words" for the action... I use "hurry up"... give her 5 mins and if she doesn't do anything then put her away. If she does her potty then say "good hurry up" and bring her inside and play with her.. then you can give her a treat and crate her again.

NOW, go cut a few more logs.. hahahhaa

The play can be brief.. dogs don't think in time.. they think in pictures and she will only know she played

GOOD LUCK

Puppies are just like babies. They have their own schedule sometimes. But, maybe your pup is constipated? Have you changed her diet lately? If you're doing everything you were doing before and all of a sudden there's this change. Maybe take her to the vet just to make sure everything is working right and that she's okay. Otherwise, I'd just chalk it up to her just being a puppy. If I put my 8 month old pup in his crate too early at night, he will also whine in the wee hours of the morning to go. So, I try to keep him up as late as possible, and make him go out then. He's been really good at nights! Good luck to you!

You can do what is called matching and this will be a tool to teach her a bathroom command.

What you do is light a match (the flexible ones you find in a book of matches not a box) and blow it out. Spit on the end and shove it into the rectum of the dog (not too far) the pressure makes the dog empty out so get her out right away. While she is going say bathroom to her and give her treats. She will soon associate bathroom with going poop.

This is an honest method. Breeders use it to empty out dogs before going on flights to their new homes etc. Email if you have any more questions.

You definately can't rush a puppy's pooping time. My friend is a dog trainer and went through hell traning his great dane... imagine how long that puppy took. He spent months doing the same thing. The only thing that helped was taking him out repeatedly before bedtime, about every 1/2 hr before bedtime.

Just be thankful that she isn't pooping in the house. Being patient is a hard thing to do with puppies, but if you want a good dog then it is a must. good luck.. she's worth it

first you have to keep your patience. but at 4am i understand this is easier said than done. try letting her out one more time before bed. it's hard to say no when you have to go you have to go. maybe feed her earlier if that's possible and walk her later and see how that does. good luck.

Sounds like she may be constipated , feed her dog food with rice in it. It's good for the digestive system.
