Trail service between Southern and Northern California is Fast, frequent and reasonable in price! Amtrak basically offers 3 choices; The most cost effective would be the San Joaquin route which travels through the central valley (Fresno etc) requiring a short bus connection from Bakersfield to Los Angeles on the south end. The Central Coast Pacific Surfliner which travels through Santa Barbra requiring a short bus connection on the north end from San Luis Obispo to the bay area. And the last option is the Coast Starlight which is a once daily through train all the way through the state. well techinally the train doesnt go to San Francisco
the trains go to Oakland or emeryville and you have to take
a bus over the Oakland-bay bridge to San Francisco
Amtrak has two trains from southern California
to the bay area
one is the San Joaquin train (which really starts in Bakersfield
you have to take another Bus from LA union station to Bakersfield
to connect to that train..
now Amtrak also operated the starlight which does
orginate in Los Angeles which opeates along coast
to Oakland -(it contiunes to Sacramento and terminates in Seattle.
unfortunelly due to UP Dispatching it tends to run late

so thats why its nickname is starlate, sometimes it has
run over 3 to 5 hours late..
but otherwise its a fun trip
great scencery along the coast..
as well
allow at least 10 hours..
