Actually you might want to investigate the harmful effects ionic air cleaners can create. From what I understand it emits dangerous ozone levels in your home. If its broke don't fix it. I would do some research before using it again. If anything simply use a better filter in your A/C. I hope that helps.

Electronic air cleaners have a pre-screen or a series of positively charged wires that air passes through first, at which point ANY bit of dirt or as we say in the industry "particulate" becomes positively charged. As the particulate continues its journey it then begins to pass between the negatively charged "collectors". Because opposite forces attract, the dirt sticks to the collector plates. The buzzing may be the transformer. The crackling or zapping is when a piece of particulate (hair, dust bunny, etc..) touches both the ionizer (positive charged) with the collector (negative charged) at the same time. Be careful, some can give you a heck of a shock if you're not careful.

Ours makes that sound when itz cleaning really dirty air or when it get something that's dirty in the air
