it is a spice

Su Z Cue,
I didn't ask for a recipe, I just wanted to know what spice I could substitute. BTW I didn't assume that most people didn't know what it was. I don't like to assume things myself. However, I would figure that most people wouldn't answer unless they knew what it was. I merely mentioned that it was a spice because flowwer wanted to know what it was. Okay!!

Cardamom Substitute
It takes 10 whole pods to make 1 1/2 teaspoons of ground cardamom.

Or, use ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, coriander seeds or mace, starting with half the quantity specified and adding more to taste.

just ignore the cardamom! it is milder than any of the others and what you have is good: ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. Cardamom is usually used in pound cakes. It is a part of nutmeg, I think I read somewhere. Cardamom is best purchased in July!! not so much demand for it then!! At Christmas the demand is heavy and the stores run out of it. I have hit this snag before!!

Cardamom is a spice that can not be substituted for. It has a very strong taste. Maybe try using cinnamon but It just wont be the same.
