Muscle atrophy means that the muscle has shrunk and is not in "shape" like a normal muscle should be. The causes are from lack of usage- as in having a broken leg and having a cast on- it will cause atrophy of the muscles of the calves because the leg will be immobilized for at least 8-10 weeks.

Symptoms and signs of atrophy would be less defined muscle mass, weakness when using those specific muscles and possible loss of balance if you're talking about leg muscles.

Muscle atrophy is muscle wasting due to not using that muscle. For instance, if someone is lying in bed and doesn't use those leg and thigh muscles, when they get out of bed they will be very weak. That is one of the reasons hospital patients are ambulated so quickly...the other reason is to keep them from throwing a blood clot...after surgery. Atrophy of a muscle sometimes can be remedied, but if the disuse was too long, a problem called contractures happens and will no doubt be life-long.

It is the withering away of the muscle. It is caused by lack of use, such as people in comas and or bedridden some other way. Various diseases can cause it too. An atrophized muscle can not be used like inability to stand. It is often reversible through physical therapy, exercising it, unless it is caused by a disease that actually deteriorates the muscle.
