I have a 7 month old 65 pound mastiff (runt) that will probably grow to be 100 lbs. My girlfriend who is new to dogs and not as much of a dog person as I am does not want the dog in the bed at night. I like having him on the bed

My girlfriend is only here two nights a week while the dog is here all the time obviously. She is concerned with the cleanliness of the dog i n the bed and the dog taking up room. Even if I wanted him out of the bed how could i train him not to go on it now that hes been on there for 6 months.

I'm sorry but tell her to get over it. She may be there only 2 nights a week but what about later if you marry her? Everything isn't going to just change overnight. If your unable to agree about something as important as your best friend (and if she's trying to take something that important from you) RUN AWAY!!!!
As for cleanliness, if you bath him regularly what could the problem be? My dogs will all sleep on my bed with me.

You have a girl friend and a dog! How the heck did you get a girl friend? Most intelligent women would have nothing to do with a guy who sleeps in bed with his dog. That's the place for a girl friend. It seems you have less respect for her than you have for your dog. Sorry mate but your dog should be in a kennel in an enclosed yard at the back of the house. You're treating a dog as though it was a human which it is not. Mastiffs are great dogs if they are trained correctly. I'm sure your girl realises that much. I wish her luck in training you and getting you to train your dog. Why don't you, your girl friend and your dog join a dog training club?

You need to decide which is more important to you-- the girlfriend or the dog. She is within her rights to not want a dog as big as a person in the bed with you, and what happens when you guys make love??? Does the dog want to play too??? That would make me run away from you and your dog. Your bed should be for people, and your dog should have his own bed. By the way, letting your dog sleep in your bed can also cause a lot of problems with dominance, esp if she isn't there all the time. Pick one to be in the bed-- whichever one gives you more satisfaction. Good Luck!!

Well you can train your dog to sleep in a crate or in another room @ night while she's there. Or train your dog to sleep on the floor next to you two @ night while she's there. Another fact to consider is how often you clean your dog, how often he goes outside and gets messy, as well as grooming for your dog. If the cleaniness is a matter.

Personally it depends how large your bed is and how much room you take up. I had two dogs at one point (a poodle mix 16lbs and a miniature pisncher 10lbs), and my boyfriend and I shared a full size bed. Needly to say both dogs plus us slept in the bed and we didn't have a problem. But that's also because his family has a boxer that use to sleep in the bed with him before he got to be the size he is now, and learned how to sleep on the floor on this nice large pillow bed until he had trouble going up and down the stairs @ night. So usually dog owners are more understanding as to a non-dog owner about dogs sleeping on the bed.

I would say it's really mean to have a dog sleep in the crate @ 100lbs. So the best thing is to train him (if you must abide by your girlfriend's peferences) is to train him to sleep on the floor next to the bed in the same room. I don't know how to really train a dog to do that, but I do know you can train a dog to do that after he slept in the bed for a period of time because my boyfriend's family trained their boxer to do that (as mentioned above).

Good Luck.

Since its just two nights consider her feelings. The dog will understand just let him know it's ok. Make him a little bed. If you love her you'll give her that respect especially if you want some lovin. It's uncomfortable whens dogs are lookin. Find things that she would be interested in doing with the dog. But not all the time. Try to get her interested in dogs.

Depends on which relationship is more important to you! Personally I'd rather have a girlfriend in my bed than a dog. (assuming they're not one in the same) Train the dog to sleep on the floor nearby. Besides, how do you guys 'do' anything with the pooch there? Talk about Doggy Style! ;-)

I wouldn't want to sleep in a bed with a mastiff, or in a bed where a mastiff regularly sleeps either.

If you want both worlds, get your dog one of those big fluffy dogbeds to sleep on while your girlfriend is at the house, and have a whole separate set of bedding to use when she's there.

A bit of a pain in the butt, but if you want them both, you've got to give somewhere...

Keep him out of the bed the two nights that she is there. Change the sheets before you get in bed. I wouldn't like sleeping next to someone else's dog even if it was my boyfriends.

Ask your girl if she would want to sleep on the floor. Seriously, i wouldn't kick the dog off. The dog will be there for you even after the girlfriend is gone.

Dogs love unconditionally, don't cheat and will be your best friend. Tell the girfriend to deal with it. We have a great dane that shares our king size bed and my boyfriend knows that he has to accept it. The dog can handle being kicked out for you to have intimate time.
