If you e-file your return there is a calendar which shows when the IRS sends your refund, with no guarantees of course.
Refunds are sent on Fridays for returns accepted by the IRS by 11 am on the Thursday of the previous week. So, if your return is accepted on Thursday morning, you should can have your refund electronically sent to your bank the Friday of the next week, in just 8 days. If accepted on Thursday afternoon, you have to wait another week, or 15 days.
If you want your refund mailed to you, the IRS mails the refunds one week after the electronic release date. It takes an extra week to print the checks and mail them. Plus it takes a few days for the mail to reach you, so 3-5 weeks for an e-filed return.
If you mail in your return, it takes much longer, 6-8 weeks.
Here is the calendar I mentioned:

My tax forms arrived at the end of December. My refund payment will probably show up a few weeks after I file.
