Atheists- What if Christianity is right? If you're right, we all cease to exist after death and life is pretty much meaningless. If Christianity is right, if you die an atheist (I don't want to play the hell card but it is a part of Christianity) you will not spend eternity with the Lord in Heaven. I am not going to say that you will burn forever in the lake of fire because I admit that I really don't know what actually happens when you go to hell. But I know that it isn't Heaven. Wouldn't it be better just to be safe and pick something to believe in?

Please don't just give the a thumbs down and post something without seriously consider what I'm saying.

Thank you for most of your answers. I really was interested to know what you thought. I wasn't just trying to "cram religion down your throat".

When I said that life would be meaningless, I just meant that there wouldn't really be a point to life. We would just be born, try to survive, die, then that'd be it. I know that the people in our lives are not meaningless.

Life is meaningless if there is nothing after death? Are you actually saying that if I don't believe in heaven that holding my grand children has no meaning, or a walk around the lake with my wife has no meaning? How about visiting a sick friend in the hospital, is that meaningless also?

A couple of weeks ago I stopped along the highway to help a woman that was out of gas. As it turned out she had been beaten by her husband and was trying to find help, so I got her some fuel and brought her to my home, and now I learn that I really didn't have to do any of that since it was all meaningless. Just think of all the trouble I could have saved myself if you had posted this question earlier.

You've made incorrect assumptions. Atheists do believe in things, just not the same things as Christians. And I really wonder about the hundreds of posts like yours, that imply that beliefs can simply be chosen. Let's say God only accepts people into heaven if they like carrots. I don't like carrots, but I force myself to eat them every day. I eat the exact amount prescribed in the Bible even though I gag with every bite. However, when I get to the pearly gates, I am rejected because I don't like carrots sincerely. The guy two spots ahead of me got in having only eaten two carrots in his life, but he thoroughly enjoyed both of them.

You might say that my tastes would change and I'd start to like carrots, but I have a hard time seeing how a benevolent God would want me to shove carrots down my throat enough to condition this response. It's also likely that that wouldn't happen, and I'd still be stuck with a life full of good works and carrot eating that lands me in hell.

Seriously, why would you assume that everyone should believe like you? There are other religions which do not involve heaven or the hell ideology. So what if they are right and Christianity is a big farce created by the church for the church and of the church? Better to believe as your heart tells you than to go contrary to your heart and be a hypocrite, right?

Well, here's the deal. Christianity requires that you die to the self and be born again, handing your will to God in the process. I choose to keep my free will, whatever the consequences may be. I don't really want to spend eternity with someone who took my freedom away.

There is not what ifs about it. There will be a lake of fire for all that disobey Gods Word. A true christians knows this and does not question that fact. God does not like luke warm servants.

Isa 47:14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: [there shall] not [be] a coal to warm at, [nor] fire to sit before it.

Everyone else reamed you for Pascal's Wager (rightly so), so I'm going to just ask you a question.

Do you truly only believe because you're afraid of being punished. If you look, honestly, at your faith and can say that it is only in place as an insurance policy...what kind of faith is that? What kind of life is that? Be honest with yourself, as we are.

What if you're wrong. You spend your only life restricting what you can do. You spend much of your life on your knees grovelling to a non existent being. What if when you get to the end you find that you have wasted your life in superstitious fear

Pascal's Wager. Look it up. It's a horribly flawed argument.

What if you're wrong and Allah is the true god? Or THor? Or Zeus? I guess you're going to hell.
