There is always a possibility of it.
Some asteroids are in eccentric orbits that make them potential threats.
We know very little about when one will hit and what the magnitude will be.

LoL there is unlikely to be a meteor crash in 2012, and NASA can, actually, come across a meteor heading in the direction of the Earth. we've stepped forward sufficient structures that we could come across and detour a meteor long earlier it hit the Earth. we've never completed it earlier, yet in basic terms putting something in a meteor's way at the same time as that's some distance sufficient out in area could deflect it sufficient that it may pass over our planet fullyyt. whether we've a lot of action pictures approximately having to deliver up communities and hearth nuclear missiles at incoming projectiles, in basic terms "throwing a rock" at one edge of it may deliver it on a distinctive direction. there is not any friction in area, so changing a meteor's trajectory must be particularly uncomplicated; we in basic terms have not tried it yet. No concerns.

No... if it were true, Nasa.gov would definitely have something posted about it.
I read something earlier today about an asteroid which was, at one point, thought to be on track to hit earth; however, it was later determined that it was not going to hit earth after all. I looked and unfortunately I cannot find the URL of where I read that... however, it might have been the reason for what your teacher said.

Maybe soon, but maybe not. I haven't heard of a huge meteor heading towards us. But in the long term ( and I really mean the long run - millions of years ahead) - it is inevitable. Just this is what theory of probability says.

Yes it hit 3 days ago, you are in:
1. Heaven
2. Hell
3. If you do not believe in either of the above you should probably quit Yahoo answers because we all ceased to exist.

There have been several near misses. In astronomical terms, a "near miss" is anything closer than the moon's orbit, so even a near miss isn't much of a threat.
