I'm looking for a website that will give me basic information on the reasons and results of recyling without getting too technical. Any ideas?

Contact the company called "Waste Management". It is a big company that is known nation wide. They are most likely your best source of information. You might also try "Home Power Magazine". They have a lot of information on recycling.
A company that specializes in recycling metal, such as aluminum would also be a good source. Recycling doesn't just help reduce land fill needs to get rid of trash, it reduces the cost of making products we already use. There is a higher cost to produce aluminum from the ore it comes from than there is from simply melting aluminum that has already been made. That is why people collect those cans, and can get some really good money from selling them to a recycler. Steel is another metal that is in high demand. It is by far easier to melt steel to make another product out of it than to make steel from iron ore. Paper can be used to make not just more newspaper, but several other wood products, such as paper towels, as well. Recycling is an excellent idea. It is something that everyone benefits from, even if it is not obvious to casual examination.
Any company that bottles drinks will most likely have information about recycling.

I honestly don't know. I have been trying to figure out what I can and can't put on the curb. From what I have found part of the confusion is that some communities recycle differently from others. So where you can recycle shampoo bottles in Cleveland, you can't in Toledo. It all has to do with wether or not there are facilities to process it or whether they can resell the items you recycle to a buyer. I recently discovered that my community actually goes through the regular trash and recycles some of it; suprised the heck out of me. Good luck in your quest.
