Two important rules that describe the way the universe works are, "nothing is always" and "everything is sometimes". Many people are uncomfortable with this and would prefer a universe in which they can always predict what will happen and also have some control over seemingly random events. To this end, people try to connect something that they did last year, like break a mirror, with the water heater going out in the middle of their shower this morning. It is all just an attempt to bring order to chaos to increase comfort levels.

Great question and I can only surmise or speculate that people would rather fool themselves than break clear of fear , incessant lies , peer pressure ,and the comfort of false promises.
Also it is usually ingrained deeply into the the person in early childhood when we are most vulnerable. Even if you realize better it is very hard for some to over come this early indoctrination ....
peace out

I think because they are seeking meaning in life. The idea that Fate exists makes them feel like there is some specific purpose. Anyway, that's how I used to feel. I used to believe in angels, because I wanted to think that there were some sort of unseen beings that cared for me. But I don't believe that this is true. I was mentally ill at the time.

When you believe in things unseen, it can be hard to draw the line between plausible and false.
