I was trying to find a way to build a durable bomb shelter. So I had a idea I have a friend will a mobile drill set on the back of a large f550 truck. i own some 50 acres in a area known for volcanic caverns or lava rubes deep underground some in excess of 100 feet deep. so I hired a guy with ground based radar and had him test my property. we found voids at 237 feet. so we brought in the mobile drill and started drilling. we hit the void and expanded the hole with huge well casings 4 feet across. Now we have a opening to a million year old lava tube. We are going to line it with cement and cement each end with steel reinforced concete. put wiring down into the lava tube and put plumbing in also. I think this should stand against a direct hit from a nuclear blast. what do you think

I believe I have tapped into a deep unknown section of the kuzmara lava tube complex possible blocked by a colapse and this dunnel goes deeper at a very steep incline. possibly hundreds or thousands of feet to the center of the earth.

it makes a definit bee line for the harbor if it goes under the ocean this is really good to dampen the effect of a medium yield nuclear strike. we are cement in the base of the lava tube to set everything up for a nice man pad 237 feet down

Sounds great. How are you going to camoflauge the entrance to your shelter, because if all hell breaks loose, your not gonna want anyone to know where the entrance is.....they will do their best to blast down any door

I would say that would do it, if you placed something 270 feet down. Isreal has found a way to penetrate 70 fet of cement with a bunker buster, and then send in a nuclear bomb, a little one, 5% of what was in hiroshima. So you could probably make it, but I would go really deep, like 600 feet, or 1000. Here is the problem, if you have 30 minutes notice can you make it down there? What if you just happened to be in town? That would suck huh?

Direct hit hmmmm??? well if you do not shore up walls and ceiling it will collapse.
Second why would you care any way after a direct hit you better have food , water and about a 100 years survival plan
it will be mighty lonely down there in the dark. a lot of good your wires will do you for after a direct hit there will be no power to service them ETC. ETC.
Me I would rather stand there and watch the blast first hand.then my problems are over on this earth . But your life of self imposed exile. in a dark sightless cavern that is cold wet and smelly[ after all you will need a potty with no place for it to go peuuuu!!] a life of solitary confinement. No thanks to your future world.

That's pretty deep. I guess it's good enough, if the dirt is heavy enough. Dirt from volcanic ash can sometimes be pretty light (and moveable by a nuke). If you line it with cement, put some kind of steel skeleton inside the cement for extra support.

Well, I would say that you are as crazy as a loon if you think that your suggestion is better than the alternative.

I would also question the ratio of your resources to common sense, probably pretty high on resources and lacking in the sense department.

But, if that floats your boat and digs your cave, go for it!

I think you made it up, but don't forget to put an elevator in the shaft, and figure how to get out after an explosion destroys the elevator.

I would not fill it in. Decorate it as other contributors have suggested. It could be a good selling feature later on.

i think you should build it and set a bomb off and see what happens - if you reply..... good bomb shelter - if not limp back to the drawing board have your friend build a bigger bomb and try again
