An excess amount of fluid in your ears, or pressure change such as from fast change of altitude. Your ears and throat are all connected (that's the reason for ear, nose and throat docs) and swallowing actually causes the ear to drain somewhat

I know air pressure has a lot to do with it. Changing elevation usually seems to cause your ears to pop. My ears always seem to pop when I'm when sick, I think it's my body's inability to fight infections. I'm not quite sure why swallowing helps, maybe it opens up the airway in your ears which changes the pressure slightly.

Pressure on the ear drum. This happens commonly on airplanes during take off and in cars when you are climbing up a mountain where the air pressure changes. The equilibrium will balance out and you will hear a popping sound.
