Does morality exist without God?

If God tells you to kill your son, will you do it? Will it be moral for you to do it?

So in your belief, what comes first? God or your morals?

Of course.

Otherwise how would we know that some of what God supposedly said is a good idea (advice against murder, stealing, and lying) and other things irrelevant (advice against wearing cloth made of two different types of material).

We all have an internal sense of helpful and harmful. The controversies actually lie on the outer limits of these internal cues.

SUCH AS:
If killing one person by directing a train onto a side track would result in saving 6 lives of people stuck in a car on the main track, would it be moral to pull the lever and direct the train onto the side track.

Most people say yes.

However, when the choice is pushing a person in front of the train to stop it so as to prevent the deaths of the 6 people, most people say that is immoral.

Clearly this is an edgy dilemma, although really a thought experiment.

Thanks for asking.

Here is the wikipedia definition of morality:

"Morality refers to the concept of human ethics which pertains to matters of good and evil —also referred to as "right or wrong", used within three contexts: individual conscience; systems of principles and judgments — sometimes called moral values —shared within a cultural, religious, secular, Humanist, or philosophical community; and codes of behavior or conduct morality.

Personal morality defines and distinguishes among right and wrong intentions, motivations or actions, as these have been learned, engendered, or otherwise developed within each individual."

As you can see, morality can be influenced by religion, but does not come from religion. Even without a god to tell you what to do, you would still develop your own ideas about right and wrong.

No. God is the One who gave us the meaning of morality in His commandments and all throughout His word. Abstaining from committing adultery, murder, stealing, etc. are examples of morality as well as abstaining from fornication (sex before marriage or promiscuity), idolatry, drunkenness, witchcraft and sorcery, lasciviousness, homosexuality, etc. Without God, morality wouldn't have existed. Morality comes from God Himself in His Word. His word IS the moral law.
