Yesterday I developed two large boils that quickly turned to swollen lumps on my neck and jaw. I saw a doctor today, and I am now on antibiotics... but he says these infections are very resistant and that other measures might have to be taken if the infection doesn't clear in a week. Anyone have similar issues? It came on so suddenly, it was bizarre... but I read up on staph at WebMD and apparently that's not uncommon. Worries me, though. Especially since the resistant infections sometimes have to be cleaned surgically. :( Any insight from the medical profession or from personal experience (or the experience of family/friends) is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi. I have a skin condition called Hidradenitis Suppuratva which causes boils. I've dealt with it for about 15 years and have had cellulitis many many times. As long as you are on a good antibiotic the infection should go away but you MUST take it exactly as prescribed and finish it all. The issues with boils is that once they pop and drain, they usually do not completely drain and that is when they need to be cleaned surgically to avoid a reoccurrence in the same spot. Also, if the swelling doesn't go down and the boil doesn't open it will have to be lanced. Just make sure you keep on the antibiotics. You can also use warm compresses to try to get the boil to open on its own.

I have had cellulitis twice, it comes with a high fever and takes about two weeks to clear provided you take your antibiotics. Yes, it does have to be cleared surgically if you let it go. My son had it and had to have surgery, it was on his leg and by the third day it had to be surgically taken care of and he was in the hospital for ten days. He had the very resistant variety. Go to your doctor if the antibiotics dont work or if you get worse, as fast as you can.

I've had Staph for the past week and am now on antibiotics(Keflex).I've had it before and it took almost two weeks before it began to clear up. Do not agitate the boil. Try hot compresses to open up the sore. But take your antibiotics everyday as Doctor advises. My sore is on the back of my head and giving me terrible pain, but I know it will clear up soon(fingers crossed)

The staff I got was after a transplant, It was a bad one, but I went home, six weeks later it was all gone, I was told that a normal staff is treated with normal antibiotics, I was scared to death but there is no sign of it and no surgery, cleared up fine don't worry to much was told that just makes things worse.
