I was just wondering if people give their dogs a room, let them go outisde, let them slep anywhere, and also where not to put your dogs. Thanks!

My dog usually sleeps with me on my bed. I prefer him at the end (he's tiny but its amazing how much room he can take up!) but if its really cold I let him cuddle up next to me with his blanket over him. I also have a bed for him in my bedroom that he will sleep on if I kick him off the bed (you have to to have the final say in that..don't let it become too much of a habit) and one in the living room that he alternates. He is not allowed on the couch (so it stays relatively fur free and keep smells down for company...we have family members with allergies and I have to say they never even sniffle at my house!) We do have a couch in the basement that he is allowed on.

As one other person said, I like him to have free roam at night because what good is a dog if he is locked up somewhere unable to protect you from danger or warn you of any trouble??

My dogs have always slept in my bedroom with me, usually beside the bed or on their own bed in the same room.

Just a habit from childhood when our dogs came with us kids every night and slept in our various rooms usually besides the beds, but sometimes in the hallway near the bedrooms.

I don't allow my dogs on the bed generally. For one, the bed would need to be changed every day from the fur, smell and dirt- and I have two very clean short-haired gals! For another, allowing your dog to sleep with you shows them you're equals. Now, I adore my two girls, but they also have to know that I'm alpha dog around here and therefore they don't sleep with me.

I do make exceptions for "special ocassions," i.e. very bad storms and the ocassional Sunday morning snuggle. My dogs also know that when I have a really bad migraine, a "nap" is allowed. The key here is that they require an invite before they climb on board.

Never been a big believer in crating at night and never have left my dogs outside at night.

4 of my 5 dogs sleep outside in their doggie palaces, huge corrugated iron, 2 roomed kennels. One room for food and water 1 for their deluxe dog beds. Sometimes i will allow 1 or 2 inside on the lounge if they seem off or upset for some reason. The other dog (doberman female) sleeps in my bed under the covers, with her own pillow, but if it gets too cramped when my kids jump in, she moves herself and her pillow to the lounge where she has her own blanket. The only place i will not allow any of my dogs to sleep is on my kids beds.

It's really up to you as to where you want your pet to sleep. If you do allow your pet to sleep in the bed with you, they will make it a routine and will sleep in your bed every night. Personally, I found it works best to put them in a kennel at night. Make sure they have water to drink during the night but no food. They can 'soil' the kennel and then roll in it and stuff. If they urinate, it'll fall to the tray at the bottom. A wire cage-type kennel works best. Letting your pet sleep with you make cause them to become over-attached and will cause separation anxiety if she has to spend the night at the vet or with a sitter if you ever go out of town or something like that.

our dog sleeps in the kitchen durning the day as the kids wont give him peace to sleep and he sleeps on the couch in the living room at night as it's warmer in there for him(he's a greyhound and they feel the cold a lot more).I wont let him sleep in our bedroom as the dog will try getting on the bed or whine all night to get onto it.I think it's a bad idea to let pets sleep on your bed because if you get a new partner the pet will get jealous and not let your new partner into the bed. Also the bedroom is your private space where you relax and sleep.

My great dane sleeps on her own blanket on the floor at the foot of my bed. My vet told me not to let dogs sleep under the covers because this is known to cause cataracts. This happened to my mom's dachshund and it was too late by the time I found out. Be careful.

My 160 pounds Rottweiler sleeps wherever he wants to :o)
Seven little ones sleep in the bed with my hubby and I, and the rest in doggy beds, couches, love seats, chairs throughout the house.
I wouldn't put a dog outside without proper shelter; in the kitchen, because of the food and garbage can, as dogs tends to be attempted by them; near chemicals, cleanings supplies, automotive supplies, as in antifreeze, motor oil, etc.

My French Bulldogs sleep in bed with me and my Bernese Mountain Dog and Belgian Malinois both sleep in the living room.

We don't have a room for our dog but we put her basket in the lounge-room and she thinks that the whole room is her kennel. She rubs herself on the couches, sleeps on them and rolls on the carpet to clean herself. I would suggest putting the dog in the laundry or outside in a kennel when they are young so they get used to it. They may cry a bit in the beginning but will get used to it if you put in a blanket or an old jumper.

We have two labs. Max comes to bed with me (Hubby stays up late every night), and Molly sleeps on the couch.

I like having them have free range of the house for security issues. I know it will probably never happen, but what if someone broke in to kidnap my kid (remember Elizabeth Smart in Utah? That happened just miles from me), or rob us, or something, I'd want my dogs to be aware of it and alert us or be able to scare them off.
