They are a secret society. One way to keep things a secret is to have no windows in your lodge.

Simple. Our lodge meetings (business meetings) and degree ceremonies are private. If you want to see what a lodge room looks like, many lodges hold open houses once or twice a year, where the community is invited in to tour the building and ask questions. And in most jusrisdictions, The annual installation of officers is open to non-Masons. The installation ceremony is a greeat place to get a feel for what it is all about, and hear a lot of the symbolism that is mistakenly thought of as secret explained. Pretty boring if its not your thing, but it's a great snapshot of what it is really all about. If you're curious, contact a lodge. The only place you can find reliable info about the Masonic fraternity is from a Mason. If you wanna buy a car, dont ask the people at the bus stop for advice, and if you wanna know about Masonry, dont ask a non-Mason. Feel free to email me.

They are a secret society and have a bunch of secret rituals that the general public aren't supposed to know about. If they had windows people could peek in find out what they are doing thus making it a non-secret society. Masons are just a frat not a crazy cult or anything. They accept all that pass their evaluation. You can be a muslim, christian, jew just not atheist to be a mason.

We have several very large windows in our lodge room.

It's to keep people from peeking in and to keep the people inside focused. Also, it adds to the 'mystery' and 'specialness' of the society.
