As previously mentioned i have the following problem. I have knee pain in both knees on the outsides of each kneecap. When running i can sometimes feel a crunch with severe pain. Also standing for long periods can cause pain.... the pain comes and goes and some days are better then others..... to me the pain seems to be more from bone then soft tissue.

Now recently the pain is also more noticable on the inner lower part of the knee cap of both knees... I played contact sports for over 16 years.
Any ideas what it may be?

I have recently been experiencing knee pain as well, though I hadn't played any contact sports. I told my doctor, and she sent me to a physical therapist. It was decided that the pain was most likely caused by ill-fitting shoes, so make very sure you have decent footwear. Because of how the shoes allowed my to walk, certain muscles around my knees became weak, so that undue pressure was being applied to the joint there (femoral band tendonitis and ilio-tibial tendonitis). The doctor gave me a couple exercises and stretches that i do each day.

1. Wall Squats: Stand about a pace from a wall with feet shoulder-length apart. Place a ball or rolled-up towel between knees. Place back against wall and lower yourself to a sitting postion. Hold for ten seconds. Repeat fifteen times.

2. The other thing: Sit on the floor and place a rolled-up towel under knee. Straighten leg and hold for three seconds. Repeat ten times for each leg.

3. Step downs: Stand on one foot on a step, or similar raised surface. Bend knee, lowering other leg towards the ground, but don't touch the ground or otherwise transfer your weight. Hold for three seconds and repeat ten times for each leg.

After these, do thorough hamstring & quadriceps stretches.

Your problem may be different, I am not a doctor, but I don't see how these exercises could hurt.

I would call the doctor since you are late term to be sure, but it sounds like Sciatic nerve pain and that you pinched the nerve. I am only 18 weeks and had a bout of this last night and it is very painful. especially if it shoots down the leg from the hip that's a good indicator it's possibly sciatica. Unfortunately there is not a whole lot you can do about it but try different positions. I usually get relief after awhile if I lay on my side, elevate the top leg with a pillow and kick the bottom leg out behind me. (this worked when it happened when I was late term with my son too) It may or may not help you. Try calling the doctor and telling them though, because this could also be pain from your baby's head engaging in the pelvis.
