reformatting is cleaning off your hard drive completely essentially starting form scratch, system restore does what it says, it restores the computer to a previously recorded state. Windows usually creates a restore point once a day or so unless it has been disabled. It's pretty easy to wipe the drive clean but I recommend backing up everything you want with either an external or burning data dvds/cd's w-e. This website actually makes it very simple to understand http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/reinstall-reformat-winxp/index.html#reinstallxp
What i actually recommend is try to find a new harddrive and install windows on it then copy set that hard drive to the master and your old hard drive to the slave boot it up and copy whatever files you would like to it. Hope this helped

System Restore takes your computer back to an earlier state, usually used when you do something to your computer that you should not have done.
Reformatting removes everything from your hard drive.
Put your OS disk in your CD Rom Drive and restart your computer, It will ask you to hit any key to boot from CD. You will have to deletes the partitions that are on the drive then repartition the drive then format then reinstall windows, the disk will walk you through this. before you do this make sure you are using a Genuine Windows OS that is not currently installed on another computer.

Use your CD's that came with your computer. Stick it in the drive and follow the instructions.
Reformatting will erase everything and start over fresh, restoring everything to it's original state.
You will lose all of the programs and updates you have installed.
Make a backup of all the files and documents you want to keep before you do reformat.

They are the same but they are also different but both accomplish the same thing. It all depends on what OS you are installing. If it's XP all you have to do is put in the CD and make sure it boots from your CD-Rom in the Bios. The nice thing about the XP CD is it'll format and install for you. Otherwise you'll need a boot disk and you'll have to make it boot from the floppy drive in the Bios.
