Hair Color 101:

Color is rated on a numbered scale from 1 to 12, 1 being the darkest (black), 12 being the lightest pale blonde. These numbers are the tonal value, refering to light and dark. In addition to these numbers are letters. These letters refer to the underlying pigments and vary by manufacturer. Universally, "N" means neutral or natural, "R" means red, "G" and "C" mean gold and copper (shades of orange if you will), "B" means blue, "V" means violet. Anything "Ash" can have blue-violet to blue green pigments.

Okay, now you see how complicated this is....

To answer your question, there is no such thing as a "lightest black". Be aware that underlying pigments in color can produce some wild things if you don't know what you're doing. Seek the advice of a licensed salon professional in you area if you are planning to color your hair. You'll spend less with a pro the first time than you would to go after the fact to have your mistakes corrected.

Best of luck!

Do you mean in tone or in quality? If you want black hair, you really should choose the darkest brown you can get. It looks more natural.
