Hey, there.
I'm in desperate need of advice. A really close friend of mine, can't seem to spell anything at all. He passed highschool(we didnt go to the same one), but barely due to laziness.. I haven't know him very long (about a year), but I started talking to him a lot online, messaging and all.. and I realize, he can't spell even the simplest words correctly and he seems to leave words out or put in a word that doesn't make any sense. For example, he would say something like "i am going out soon so tho ill talk to you later and met me as 5:00" and "i dought i be able to talk to you tamro but i see and you at tomoro i will mesages you in your email."

The things he says don't make sense nearly 90 % of the time, but he isn't stupid.. its like he cant get anything out of his head and put it on paper correctly.. I don't know what this is, it could be dsylexia, but I don't know.. I'm worried because he wont be able to get anywhere in life with so many errors in his writing. Please help

That does sound like dyslexia, my sister has it. She has both types of it, its really bad. He can be tested at any local hospital for dyslexia.

Although I can understand your frustration I would just have to say: Don't worry too much. He probably knows that he cant spell, I mean if he got through school with out even knowing this then that "no child left behind" law was a little too late.

He is not alone in his problem and he is compensating for his issues. I mean, you do get what he is trying to say..so he is communicating with you the way he can.

There are places that can help him with getting a job and college work. Dyslexia and things like that are considered a disability and exceptions have to be made for people with the problem. They also cannot be discriminated against by law.

Of course like any other disability he runs the risk of discrimination, but you are his friend, you don't have to discriminate.

This isn't your problem to solve. I'm sure it's not a big secret to him that he can't spell or formulate complete, articulate sentences. The last thing he needs is someone rubbing it in his face.

Why do you think that he will not get anywhere in life because spelling and grammar are not his strong points? It's a bit judgmental of you to think so little of him because of this short-coming, don't you think? A lot of people are extremely successful in spite of their disabilities.

I had a friend in HS with a huge problem with dyslexia which he did not share with anyone. He's now a successful dentist. Don't underestimate people because of the way you think they should be...

He is what he is, and no one can change that. I guess all you have to do is work around those things and think of him more as a person. He might have a problem, but it is normal for some people. He's actually lucky. He might (or could've been) mentally retarded, but there is no way for me to know...
Hope this helps.

Tell him to run for political office. No one will know the difference in that arena.

He probably was never taught phonics in school... If he wants to learn how to spell I guess he could take a phonics course?
