Everyone says you should have 2 cats to keep each other company. I've always had cats(all have lived to be 20+) but have always had only 1 cat at a time. I give my kitties a lot of attention & they've always seemed happy. I've also heard that if you have multiple cats that they're not as affectionate to their owner because they have each other. What do you think?

Well, we've always had at least two cats, for the last 20 years. This is the first time we have only one cat. She's a one year old Ragdoll, and I can't imagine another cat in the house with her; she's enough for us with her odd character and actions.
However, I do miss the interaction of two cats. It's nice for them to have someone to play with and bug, and to curl up with. I always advise people to get two.

One is really more than enough, and yes it's true what you said about that if you have more than one, they don't show affection towards the owner, cats, as it is aren't that affectionate, I always felt kinda used by my cat, they only cared about being fed and pampered, now that I have a beautiful loving pup, I see what a huge difference it is, cats really have a I don't give a care attitude, they only come around once in a long while. One pet alone is a lot of work as it is, so I'd get just one.
Best wishes.

I had one cat and a dog. When I was teaching my class of second graders, a kitten walked into my classroom and fell asleep. He was very malnourished and very sweet. I decided to adopt him and a week later my husband brought home another cat that was rescued by the Coast Guard. They found her struggling for her life in Honolulu Harbor. About three months ago, we adopted another kitten from the Pet Store. With all these animals, they all have each other to play with and keep each other company. However, they actively seek out our attention throughout the day and love to be cuddled and fussed over. I think it has a lot to do with the personalities of the cats you have. Sure it's expensive with all cats and dog in the house but they make our lives better.

If one cat is all you want to have, then that's fine. I had one cat growing up and then two cats growing up, each situation worked out well. Now I have two cats and they are best friends.

Even if you have more than one cat, it doesn't mean that they'll get along. They may not end up spending time together playing, but may avoid each other.

Cats all have their own personality. If the kitty is loving and likes to cuddle, then it will spend time with you as well as with the other kitty.

Though when you have two cats, and they get along, it's nice for them to have a buddy to play with, especially if you're away from the house for long periods of time. They will also get in less trouble when there is two of them, since they will play together more than trying to get into mischif.

I only had one cat for the longest time and he was fine, as long as I didn't leave him alone for too long. Like I could spend the night away and leave him completely alone and he would be okay, but I always "heard about it" when I got back. If I went on long term vacation, I made sure there was a human who could spend time with him, but I still "heard about it" when I got back.
I now have a kitten buddy for him, and not much has really changed. I now "hear about it" from TWO sources instead of one. Unless you've got a REALLY needy cat, I don't think having only one is that bad.

I've had one cat at a time and two at a time and they were both equally affectionate towards me. You have to make sure they know that you're the food giver and the one who fetches the squeak toy when it gets behind something. It's nice having two cats if you can handle the clean up of the litter box.

I think one cat is fine. I've had just one & I've had up to 9. I don't feel it's true that if you have more then one they'll be less affectionate to you. I have 8 right now and they are very affectionate to me. Every time I sit down I have a cat jump on my lap.

there's advantages to both. it's nice to provide a playmate, for them, but it's also nice to have just one. The expense is much less with one kitty, right now I have 12 cats, and we go through a large bag (avg 18 lbs) of food in 2 weeks. Plus they all have to have shots, and be spayed or neutered and the cost of cat litter. I had one cat for the longest time and it was nice to have that way because we were best buddies.

I think two is the magic number, personally. My cats adore one another...but they adore me as well. I get plenty of snuggling from them both.

The two of them romp and play with one another - they get a lot of great exercise that way. Yes, I play with them, too, but I'm not available 24/7 for them.

I don't know - really, I suppose it depends on the cat or cats in question!
