Well, there's the direct approach: "Would you like to accompany me to the Valentines Day dance?"

Or you could ease into it. A lot of people seem to have a strong opinion about Valentines day. It might make an all right ice-breaker to say, "So, what are your thoughts on Valentines Day?" His response will be a good barometer for how he would feel about the 'direct question.' You could continue to beat around the bush and hint at that you really want him to ask you (for a man to take the initiative is a good sign that he has balls). But some guys (like myself) are really dense. If you get the feeling he's dense, just ask. He won't stop being your friend because of it. If he does stop being your friend, then he was a loser to begin with!

You could tell him we could make beautiful music together on valentines day. Will you go with me to the valentines day ball? I know it's way corny.

"hi john how are you?"
"his answer" which we hope is "fine"
"would you like to go to the valentines dance with me?"
"yes"
I'll leave the rest to you. Good luck
