I've been dying my hair dark brownish red for the past 5 months, and I want a change, go back to a blonde color, like a medium blonde... But last time I tried to strip it and then color it, it was a HUGE mess. How do I effectively change my hair color to a blonde myself???

Oh my gosh I JUST did this exact thing like last week. So here is what I did:
I used ColorZap, which I bought at Sally Beauty Supply for $10 to take the dark brown red out of my hair, but because I didn't apply it quickly enough and evenly I had to do it the next day as well to completely remove the color.
Then I was stupid and dyed it a super light ash blonde to remove the very slight ornage tint from my hair cause I wanted a clean base to dye it a natural blonde, this ended up complicating things as it made my hair pure white.
I won't talk about how many store brand hair dyes I bought and color strand tested only to return because they obviously were going to turn a weird color on my hair.Turns out store box brands are pretty unpredictable as to how they'll react.
SO....I went to Sally's beauty supply bought Neutral Protein Filler for my hair, a bottle of their haircolor from the Ion line in 81/2 natural blonde, a application bottle to put the hair dye in and 20 Volume activator to activate (the white creamy stuff you mix with hairdye) the hairdye which cost me $15 all together. Then I went home and used the protein filler, just squirted it all over my hair and left it for 20 minutes (this makes your hair less porous after the damage of stripping it,if you don't do it your haircolor will end up darker in some spots from uneven absorbtion of color not to mention quite often allow your hair to emphasize the tones such as blue or orange in the hair color your using,in my case it would have been purple since thats the tone in *natural* color hair dyes) then mixed and applied the hair dye and left it for how long the chart from the hair color said and rinsed.
My hair was a very natural looking blonde color, surprisingly barely damaged feeling, and when I added a few light blonde highlights around my face it looked great!
I hope everything turns out as well for you, if I can recommend one thing it would be to give in and buy your hairdye at Sallys for this particular hair project, otherwise you might end up with a purpley, orangey or grey-ish toned hair. Also avoid Feria hair color at all costs. That stuff is never good.
My hairdresser even told me how surprised she was at how great my hair felt and looked when she learnned I did it all myself! Though I had my mother help me apply the color stripper, it's hard to do the back of your head alone....

That is definitely a professionals only area. See, to get the blonde highlights you have now, you hairdresser likely had to bleach them out. And the only way you would get completely blonde is to use a powder lightener to bleach the whole thing, but with the highlights already there, you'd be layering bleach on top of bleach, which is really aggressive and potentially damaging. You could try using a color remover, which is less abrasive, but it won't get you Gwen Stefani blonde, just your natural color back. Then you could have that toned and highighted professionally, and your end result would be a medium blonde with light blonde highlights, which would look pretty light and natural. Anything else I would let a skilled hairdresser do. You may even want to google a color correction salon, some specialize in that. Happy coloring!

Color will not remove another color, so you cannot "dye" it back to blonde. First you must remove all of that old color. This is a process best left to the professional. I say this because it is very easy to damage your hair trying to bleach that old color out; you can end up with bright orange to mustard yellow hair and cause severe breakage.

If you choose to attempt this on your own, try Salon Care Gentle Color Remover available at Sally Beauty Supply Stores (about $12). It's a small blue & white box with two bottles inside. It contains no bleach or peroxide and is designed to remove only artificial, oxidized (permanent & demi-permanent) hair color while not altering the natural pigment. This may need to be repeated depending on how much darker you have colored your hair.

Otherwise, spend the money to have a licensed professional return you to your nautural shade. It's cheaper to do this than to have your hair fixed after attempting it yourself.

Best of luck!

Girl, DO NOT try this at home- literally. If you don't know what you're doing you can really screw yourself. Changing your hair color to blonde is very difficult ESPECIALLY if you have been using colors with reddish tones in them for that long. Your hair can turn out orange. In order to go from dark to light, you have to bleach. There's no way around it and I would not recommend you do this by yourself. Go to a professional, even if it means spending more money. Imagine yourself in your bathroom with a bunch of instructions, gloves, bleach, timers, mixers and all the while being nervous about it. Remember that you get what you pay for.

That all depends on the present color; the texture; and overall health of hair. For that question, I would refer you to either a Beauty Supply Assistant or a Hair Colorist. I hope everything turns out ok, it should. Have a fun adventure

if you have blonde hair this will naturally get bleached by the particular sun in the summer. There has been this guy in my class who had golden blonde hair that has been a medium brown near the bottom. When he came back to college after summer vacation, it was almost platinum blonde!

DO NOT do this alone!! You need to go to a professional. Remember, its your hair that you are talking about, not something to screw around with!!
