This is a wonderful question, are you planning to "jump the pond, and visit the mother country?" Well, earlier today, I smoked a fåg, then went and put petrol in me lorry (I smoked a cigarette and put gas in my truck).
"England and America are two countries seperated by the same language." - George Bernard Shaw
Click the link in Source List, and it will give you a good dictionary for the differences in the two different yet same languages. After all you can write a Check in the States, but a Cheque in England. Make sure you never wash you colors with whites when doing your laundry in the states, but in England the Colours may bleed when you are doing your washing.

Spelling you can learn from Wikipedia (like you said) and other websites, but speech is more difficult. It's all about practice. So talk to some English people. And if you can't find any, watch British television! The detective things (Inspector Morse, Dalziel and Pascoe), soaps operas (Eastenders), BBC News (CNN is stupid anyway ^^) and a LOT of Monty Python.

this one is IMPORTANT
"bum" is bottom
"fanny" is not bottom, it's slang for female genitalia.
so if you ever say "fanny pack" to a brit, they will laugh. it's "bum bag."
most slang is really easy to pick up on if you are in england. it is strange to hear them say "aluminium" rather than "aluminum", like we're used to.
if you want to learn cockney rhyming slang, good luck. i barely get it and i lived in london for a while.
