I am going to recommend a great book to you. It's called The Scarred Soul: Understanding & Ending Self-Inflicted Violence. It will help you answer your question.

Well that is a question that you are going to have to fine out yourself. You really need to get involved with a therapist, and work on it, so you do not self harm yourself any more, and if you feel like you are going to self harm yourself then you need to call a crisis line, 911, or a hosiptal, and they can get you help and keep you safe from harming your self. So try and get an appointment with a therapist, and work on your problems, and you will proably fine out why you are self harming and you will learn to use healthy coping skills instead of self harming ones.

You need to go speak to a psychologist or a psychiatrist about this. Self mutilation is often that a person sees harming themselves as like a way of either punishing themselves somewhat...ie - if one is a cutter....they cut themselves to inflict pain on themselves to kind of solidify the mental pain that they may be feeling, or to also "punish" themselves somewhat.
This is not a good place to ask about it because yes, you are going to get some decent answers, but you're also going to get alot of rude comments and self mutilation and self harm is no joking matter. I would speak to an adult that you feel comfortable with...your parents, a school counselor, etc.
I read some of the answers that you got to this question and I really wouldn't listen to many of the answers if you can. Please get some help for yourself.

There are several reasons why you "self-harm" or as I call it "engage in self destructive behavior". You may have low self-esteem and hate yourself. Maybe your life is very chaotic right now and you damage the only thing that you can control which is yourself. Or you like the pain that you feel when you cause yourself harm. Your reasons really depends on what types of behavior you are doing to your body.

Self harm is usually an extreme way of dealing with stress. Don't worry, in itself, does not mean you are attention seeking (as many who do this don't seek attention) or even suicidal. I would definitely seek professional help as this could be the beginning of Borderline Personality Disorder especially if you get mood swings, suicidal feelings (don't panic at the sound of that, it's just an illness that is characterised by self-harm and fluctuating moods) which can be treated with medication and/or psychotherapy. It is definitely worth seeing your gp about. They only want to help and won't judge you. If you need to talk any further please email me, as I suffer from this too and can understand what you're going through.

My g/f used to self-harm by cutting herself. She said it was because she was hurting inside but wanted to show her hurt. It's not like everyone can see you've got a broken leg and people will see it and give you help. It's a call for help. You need to get advice and support. When you can identify the source of your hurt and heal it, then you won't self-harm. Take care!

Self harm is for some people a way of coping.
Most Self Harmers have clinical or undiagnosed depressional or mental problems.
Self Harming helps them to cope by :
Releasing intense feelings/emotions
Physically expressing pain
Self-punishment
Establishing control
The truth is, people who intentionally harm themselves are in fact very normal and sane people, who are in a lot of emotional pain. They self harm as a way to cope, because they were probably never taught how to deal with intense feelings and emotions in healthy ways.

self harm is (forgot the exact %) but over 75% caused by early child hood sexuall abuse. and only getting it out will help whatever it is that caused it. most people like to see the blood , feel the endorphans, (just like bulimics)know that their still alive, even though they don't feel it after a while. it is an illness, although discussing this issue with a counselor or someone you trust may help. good luck

well lets see here...
i can't really answer your question;
but if you want tips how to stop....
lets look at cutting.
if you cut, then...this sounds so stupid..but works..you should try drawing red lines where you want to cut.
if your very seriously into it....self harm is serious and you should talk to someone you trust.
Remember it's just an addiction like anything else.
