My diseased liver cannot remove ammonia from my system. I spent a week in the hospital while on vacation last year because of it. My world was a mixture of real and hallucinations. Really weird!! Red meat is a big culprit and so are raw onions. People with liver disease react differently to ammonia. I was about maxed out, but some have trouble with it at lower levels and some higher than me.
I now take latulose syrup (mild laxative) to keep my system moving which keeps the levels down. I suffer from end stage liver disease and a transplant is in my future. I try to eat healthy and always remember that rough week in the hospital. Guess you could have called me Windex with all the ammonia! Hope all goes well you and your family.

usually when you have to much amonia in your blood your liver can not break down the amonia in your blood so the level increases. i have seen people with amonia levels 2 and 3 times what they should be and usually they have an altered mental status. hope this helps. if this is happening to you i would talk to your doctor about seeing a liver specialist!! good luck
