Cheese it's self is spoiled milk (plus renen, but that's not realy important for this question). As such, the cheese it's self will not be ruined by the mold. The tast, however, will be altered slightly. Normaly it has a more aged taste (which is exactly what your cheese is, more aged). It can also make the cheese have a sharper taste (such as with cheddar).
The mold, however, is not normaly part of cheese (with the exception of blue cheese) and can be poisonous if eaten. If you are going to use the cheese you need to remove the mold. Cutting off a quarter inch of cheese should be good enough and you can cut off more if you want to be safe. It is also important to rinse off the cheese after cutting it to make sure that fallen mold spores are removed. Then you want to dry it with a clean towel or paper towel to help prevent future mold.

I wouldn't eat it if I had a compromised immune system. But I've been preparing foods with chease for over 30 years, and I've often just cut off the mold plus a quarter inch of the cheese next to the mold, and served my family the remainder of the cheese. Nobody in my family has ever gotten sick from it. You're right that mold is an integral part of some cheeses. However cheese itself is not a fungus.

I can almost guarantee that its safe to eat moldy cheese. Think about the question, many people eat Bleu Cheese, Bleu Cheese is mold, any good cheese, not the processed types are mold cultures. Remember the flu vacine came from mold. Just don't try and eat any other moldy foods, as you will become very ill.

It is safe only if it is a hard cheese, like Parmesan etc. If it is a soft cheese like Cottage Cheese, mozzarella, provolone, etc, you should throw it out as the mold, though not visible throughout, has permeated the entire cheese.
The blue mold you see in Bleu Cheese is totally different from the airborne green fuzzy mold that grows from sitting around. One is safe for you, the other is not.

Yes, it's safe to consume. Depending on the type of cheese you probably want to cut off the moldy parts before eating it.
Now, bleu cheese.... people pay a lot to eat that mold. LOL

Yes, but you probably would want to cut the mold off (it'll usually taste bad).

No way, I don't think I really want to get sick. I already have a stomach ulcer, don't think I want to agrivate it anymore than it already is.
