Hello! I'm not asking anything dire, this is all just sheer curiosity for the sake of getting to know my cats better. First of all: when I pet my female cat right in front of her tail on her back, she'll perk up and pull a "halloween cat" stance. She seems to intensely enjoy it. What's this all about? Note she's been fixed, and my male kitten will do it ON OCCASSION. Another question is about a cat's memory... can my cat see me and know it's me? I know it seems a bit silly, but sometimes when I havent seen my cat in a month and have new hair, clothes, etc... i wonder if she knows its me. Thanks for the help!

okay, there actually is a scent gland right at the base of their tail and because house cats don't use it a lot, it gets itchy. and males will use it more then females because they're generally more territorial so it's itchier in females. and yes, cats do know when it's you, they do have a pretty good memory, besides, it'll take a long time for them to forget your scent, underneath the cologne and junk like that.

A cat is a cat. Very independant. All cats love to get rubbed at the base of their tail. I don't think its a sexual thing, it just feels good. As far as knowing you, I don't know why you go a month without seeing your cat, but they do not forget. First you have a certain smell, that they recognize. Also your voice is one they don't forget. And yes they can see you quite well. Cats are very similar to dogs in this department, I once had a collie who was given to us by an older woman. A year later she came to our house. The dog was in one room with the door shut. He heard this woman talk and he went ballistic, barking, jumping around.....we let him out and he ran to her and loved all over her. This happened every year that she came back. No cats don't forget.

My neutered male cat did the same thing when I would pet him there. It's just a feel-good spot for cats, fixed or not. It might have vestigal sensual feelings there, like a human erogenous zone.

Our cats know us by our unique scent and movements. Some can even remember you if you haven't seen them in a year! I go to the same retreat ever summer where the owner's cat comes up & greets me. Dogs do that too.

The spot in front of the tail on some cats is kind of a ticklish spot and like people not all cats are ticklish in this spot. And your cat will know you by your scent that's why the first thing they want to do is smell you they can tell who you are and even where you've been lately.

If you think she likes being pet by her tail, try giving her a good scratch in the same place. Some cats get over-stimulated and won't put up with it, but my cats love it - they meow and purr and shake their heads around, and I've got one big male that always chews on his paws when I scratch him there. My theory is that cats aren't able to scratch that spot themselves, so getting it scratched is a special treat. Think of it like a back-rub for your cat.

As far as recognizing you, I'm sure she does. Cats typically don't have the best eyesight, but she knows your smells and sounds by heart.

Yes she does enjoy it very much. Even though she is fixed, you are scritching an area that the male cat rubs up against when they are mating, so even though she won't mate, she still gets the pleasure from it. And to the second question, yes your cat will know it's you, unless your scent changes drastcially. Scent is more how they identify you anyway, that's why they rub on you, to put their scent on you and mark you as their own.

This is a common 'pleasure' spot for most cats. My cats have it, my fiance's cats have it. Its a very sensitive spot on thier back that they like to have scratched (well some anyway.)

As for a cat's memory. Yes cats do recognize different people, no matter what they are wearing. My fiance's mother has a cat named Dude. He is very affectionate to my fiance's mother and will only allow her to pick him up and love on him. With my fiance, its another story. They play fight but sometimes Dude just wants to be left alone and goes to seek affection from my fiance's mother.

My cats recognize me as mommy. They like other people, but they respond to me the most.

Hon that is just a normal reaction for cats when you pet their backs. They love it. both male and female. And yes you cat will remember you. They have a sense of smell, that will tell them that you are their master. They are the boss, but they will still love you.I wouldn't worry about them not remembering you. They will be glad to have you back, to feed and clean up after them again. Remember they are the boss, and you are their slave. All they need is love. Hugs to your baby's.

cats have a nerve plexus where the back extends to the tail. It's very sensitive.
