There are many non-meat protein sources, and unless you mean vegan, most vegitarians eat animal protein in milk, cheese, etc.

First of all, the building blocks of all cells, both animal and plant, consist of protein. So your argument in invalid. It is just a distiction between animal protien and plant protein. Broccoli, for example, is 48% protein by volume. Most vegetables have protein, however the protein values are not as high as muscle meats are which are almost 100% protein.

That being said, it is important to know that too much protein is very, very bad for ones health. We all need SOME protein, but not the current values that most people consume.

How do I know? I have been a vegetarian for 20 years. When I first became a vegetarian, I actually did some research on diets and I discovered that some of the myths that I still see people believing today, were, as I said...myths. I am healthier today than ever, I have more energy than I did when I was 20 and a meat eater, I have no cholesterol issues, weight issues, worries about diabetes, etc. I can just sail through life without worrying.

I love that!

there are virtually no people in the U.S. who have a protein deficiency, if you exclude people with eating disorders and children who are being starved by their horrible parents/guardians. You reallly don't need to eat meat in the U.S. to get enough protein. Dairy products and eggs have tons of protein, and with careful planning, even people who don't eat those things can get enough protein by careful consumption of beans and legumes. Vegetarians are most at risk for vitamin and mineral deficiencies, because meat is an excellent sources for those nutrients. A multivitamin with minerals is probably advisable for vegetarians. Even if you continue to eat meat, you don't need more than about three 3-oz servings of meat a week to fulfill your protein requirement.
