They are primarily used in industry to cut different metals, steel,
bronze, copper, aluminum, and even plastic. They are often used in meat markets. A band saw is often used in wood shops.
The difference: A power hack saw, (sometimes called a cut-off saw), has one large blade which goes back and forth as it cuts.
A band saw has one large circular blade that is in one continuous motion as it rotates around two large wheels. And as the name implies it looks like a large hoop with teeth.

power hack saws also known as saws-alls are useful for demolition work as they have a reciprocating blade that juts out from the motor. Since the blade protrudes, it can go almost anywhere/
bandsaws are useful for making accurate and nice cuts on conduit, pipe, etc.
Either will cut anything- its just a matter of speed and access.
Remember always use the right tool for the job and always wear your safety equipment- in this case safety glasses or goggles and gloves. Also, make sure you utilize a ground fault circuit interruptor and an extension cord in good condition.

Usually metals. Bandsaws cut faster, but they aren't very portable. Different kinds of blades can be used in both to cut metals of various hardness levels.
