The mashed potatoes wouldn't be as rich, however, my grandmother would take some of the liquid from the potatoes that she had boiled and put into the mashed potatoes. I do think that gave them more flavor. I use evaporated milk and some of the water used to cook the potatoes when I make mashed potatoes and have gotten many complements.

If you are out of milk you can use water if necessary. But the taste will be slightly "off" so you'll have to add extra butter or season them more with pepper or salt or even garlic powder. You could use canned evaporated milk, powdered milk, canned chicken broth, even a bullion cube mixed with water. Or try adding a little ranch dressing to zip it up a little...or some sour cream or yogurt. Even some blue cheese and horseradish (my fave!) or shredded cheddar or grated parmesan or romano.
The liquid will help the consistency but you need to flavor them to make them good!
Ohhh....bacon bits...yummy too!

ABSOLUTELY! Milk added to the potatoes makes the texture creamy and less starchy.
If you don't have milk,..sour cream or half & half or cream(duh) would work just as well. Just about 1/4 cup of, or a dollop would be enough.
If you only want to add butter - it would still TASTE fine,.. consistency will not be up to par though. - It wouldn't "feel right" in your mouth.
Ok, have fun - good luck with it!
p.s. add some salt/pepper to taste whatever you do! =)

I think there is a difference. I use the water the potatoes cooked in & butter. Using the potato water not only inhances the taste but the nutritional value too.

It won't have the same creaminess to it, or the taste.
You can always use more butter, half and half, cream, or even sour cream in the mashed potatoes.

The potatoes wouldn't be as creamy with water, but like others have said, use broth, butter, and sour cream. Good stuff!

I don't think it would turn out very well. It would taste bland. I would suggest using vanilla ice cream, yogurt, sour cream, something with texture that doesn't have an overbearing taste. Broths taste good as well.

They are not going to taste good. If you have sour cream, just use that with lots of butter.
