It takes about 2-3 weeks and it seems like it's washed out It takes on a reddish/light brown hue. What can I do to stop this from happening?

Dye always fades out. Look for special shampoos with "dye protection".

Dye always fades, fact of life.
My suggestion, dye it a shade darker than you usually do. It will be a little dark at first but will fade to the perfect color.
This way you are compensating for the fading.
This is what I do for my clients.
If it's the perfect color when you first get it done, then in 2 weeks it will be too light.
If you go a tad bit darker it may be a smidgen too dark for a week or so but it will fade to your desired shade.
That way you can enjoy it longer.
They also have shampoos with a hint of color in them, so every time you wash your hair it gives the color a little boost.
They tend to not clean the hair too well, so use a regular shampoo first, then one with a hint of color, then condition,.
Don't go drastically darker than you are now, just a little.
Like say you mix 1/2 oz lt brown (level 5) and 1/2 oz med brown (level 4) maybe try 3/4 oz med brown(level4) and only 1/4 lt brown (level 5 ) . Dlightly increasing the darker color a little and lowering the lighter color.
If you use only one color try throwing in 1/4/ to 1/2 of one level darker in the mix and use 10 vol developer with it.
Use whatever you use regularly, say 2 ozs of med brown, so add in 1/2 ounce dark brown.
It will just darken it up a bit.
If it doesn;t seem to make a difference, then next time increase the darker color by 1/4 an ounce until you get it the way you like it.
Good luck
Lower level developers are for depositing color.

Try a different kind of dye from the brand you use-maybe that will make a difference; or get some "special" shampoo just for dyed hair; or lastly get a drabber from beauty supply to tone down the reddish/light brown color.
