It's a small problem but I have no clue how to solve it. Usually if I open up a new Microsoft Word document, (in print layout form) and start typing, it will begin about an inch down the paper. I think I clicked something wrong or pressed a wrong button and now if I open a new document and begin to type, it begins directly at the top edge of the paper. I know it won't print this way but I'd like to fix it. How?

In the newer versions of MS Word, there is a function where it hides that marginal space above your paper. If you hover over the gray space between the top of your paper and the toolbars, you'll see an icon appear next to your mouse that is two boxes with arrows pointing opposite ways. The text will show up saying "Show White Space" and just click and the white space will show up again. If you want to hide it, go hover at that gray space again and it'll show the same two boxes but with arrows pointing towards each other and the text will say "Hide White Space" and if you click it, the marginal space disappears for the time being. Hope i helped.

here's an image of what i'm talking about:

You have probably inadvertantly removed the "white space" on your Print View. To reinitiate your White Space. In Print View, go to a two-page document (or just insert a page break so you have a two-page document). Slide your cursor along the area between the two pages until a double-headed arrow appears (it should say "Show White Space" and click once the arrow appears. You will have a small gray space between pages and your cursor will appear at the margin instead of the very top of the page on a new page.

It sounds like you need to move your top margin down. To do this, click Format (at the top) and then Document. You'll see 4 different numbers relating to your page margins. Change the top one to 2.54cm (that's probably what it was before) and click the Default button and OK. This will change all new documents to use those margins.

It may be slightly different for your version of Word, but you should be able to find the right bit. Hope that helped!

Down, at the bottom left of your screen, right above where it says "page 1"...you'll see about 5 icons. If you just rest your mouse on each one, it'll tell you which view it will show if you click on it. Now, I'm using Word 2003, and I think this is pretty universal...the middle button is the "print layout view". I believe this is what you're looking for. Good luck!

check on page settings or page setup in the file menu
and change the margins to suit your needs, usually 2.5 centimeters (left, upper, bottom and right) will do the trick
