I hate to drop this dime on you, but:

The Old Testament is not just any old History. Obviously, it is not the History of the World. And most certainly it is not the beginning of the History of the World.

The Old Testament and the New Testament are the "History" of the Jewish bloodline; from Adam to Jesus.

Proof:All the names in the Bible are Jewish names.

Every generation from Adam to Jesus are specifically named; along with their offspring.

"In the Beginning": In the beginning of what? The beginning of the Universe? In the beginning of Earth History? In the beginning of the Jewish bloodline? Yes, now we are getting someplace.

Yet, the Bubba Preachers teach us in Sunday school that we are descendents of Adam and Eve. Well, I am sorry to tell you this, unless you are an orthodox Jew, you cannot trace your bloodline back to Adam.

Proof: Are any of your ancestors named in the Bible? I think not.

"In the beginning": I am afraid the original Hebrew text didn't exactly phrase it that way. It said something like this "Our first great tribal leader". Just the way you would write a genealogy of your family tree. - History? Kinda. But a family tree type history of how the Jews coped with daily problems, and a list of all the Jewish generations.

My answer to your question:

The first three words of the Bible tell us it is an actual history. But of only the Jews, and the stories that were passed down through the generations.

It may surprise you: I am a Christian who tries to follow the words of Jesus. I base my faith on the Holy Spirit who has witnessed to me the validity of Jesus' words.

If you really meant to word your question like that, then I will answer it that way.

I do not remember a particular verse saying that the Bible is actual history. But it doesn't stop there, does it? There is always more to the story. Archaeologists have successfully used the Bible to find lost places that it talks about. Any searching on the internet can make that clear to you. It's still done that way today.

And then there are the prophecies, that tell of kingdoms that hadn't risen at the time of the prophecy, and yet they came ju8st as it was said - especially in Daniel.

So the Bible so far has proven itself many times over ipso facto. Just by the proof of what it has done in itself and in history. I think that's kind of neat. ( :

Jesus' assumption throughout the Gospels (as well as that of the other New Testament writers) is that it is. For one specific example, in John 3:14 Jesus said "And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up." He didn't say "Here's a parable: Imagine if there were some person named Moses, and a mythical people called Israel passing through a made-up desert, and let's pretend this mythical person lifted up a snake ..."

If you are looking for a specific verse that says "hey, y'all, the Old Testament is real!" you won't find one, but that's because the entire New Testament presupposes that to be true. It's like you don't find a statement in the dictionary that says "This dictionary is the way words are used, really it is!" The fact that you're using the dictionary presupposes you think it's telling the truth.

"Do not think that I [Jesus] have come to abolish the Law (the Old Testament) or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke or a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law (the Old Testament) until everything is accomplished. (Matthew 5:17-18)"

If I'm wrong, I apologize. please correct me
