Ok so my family and I are going to invest in a digital camera for my birthday(we're a bit behind in the times I know) One thing that isn't made clear though,is how much media space is already in most cameras.I always see the suggested cards that you can buy in addition to the camera itself but are these mandatory right away?Do most digital cams store pictures on their own?

Life is so much easier if you just get a memory card with your initial purchase and save the camera's internal memory for emergency use only. It is generally only adequate for 10-12 pictures anyhow.

Expect 10 to 30 shots tops depending on the camera. Then what? Get yourself a memory card at time of purchase. No need to spend big bucks on lots of megapixels. Sufficient would be 4 or 5. 5mp should insure excellent 8X10prints. There are cameras out there that don't produce excellent 8X10's even with 7 and 8 megapixels. Lots of cameras have 3X and 4X optical zoom, which is fine for most shots. Usually the more zoom the more money. Go back on this Website the last few days and get some ideas. Excellent brands are Sony, Nikon, Canon, Fugifilm and Olympus. At your local library look at Nov'06 Consumer Reports. Last: If your camera'sfinest setting is 4 megapixels on a 512 MB memory card you'd get about 250 shots, if it's a 5MP your card would yield about 200. Website CameraWorld.com gives a digital image calculation. Website dpview.com might come in handy. Hope I helped a little.

Not all cameras have there own internal storage and if they do its not mandatory to get a new card right away. Three things you want to look for in buying. 1.) 5MP is fine for 4x6 prints. 6.2 will give you good 8x10s. and anything above that will be good but not needed. 2.) Zoom lens 3x or more OPTICAL not digital, digital zoom is like a plus but optical is want you need if you have to have zoom. 3.) Battery type, something that you can recharge is a must. You could now add LCD size since many people want a full screen.
If you are going to get extra memory go with 512 if you are getting a 6.2 MP camera. less memory for lower MP more for bigger MP. hope this helps
