My friend is moving to China and I would like to put together a gift package. What are some ideas you have? What is a must have item for Shanghai? Thanks!

is the gift package for your friend or people in China?
you can give your friend something making him comfortable such as cushions. if you are preparing gifts for Chinese people then you have to carefully select stuffs without Made in China label. It is hard for you sometimes.

Shanghai is an amazingly modern city, and a great place to live. Your friend should definitely enjoy his/her time there.

Shanghai is extremely international, and it is quite easy to find Western comforts. While I lived there, the thing that I requested the most from home were magazines. Although you can find everything on the web, I still loved flipping through my favorite journals, etc.

Perhaps throw in some candy and peanut butter, too. You can find those things there, but they are much more expensive.

Ok, so the person is moving out of the States...you don't want to get them gifts geared toward the Orient as they will have access to everything ....instead, get them a big basket filled with U.S. stuff....licorice, soda, chips.....you know, stuff that will remind them of home since they will not be available in China.
Also....put lots of pictures in there!

I agree. Fill up a basket, gift box, bag (whatever) with goodies that will be hard to come by in China.

a carbon monoxide detector ...many places in china use natural gas for heat/cooking and they dont scent their natural gas like we do in the west. Natural gas which has not been artificially scented cannot be detected. carbon monoxide detectors are difficult to find in china and may not have the same safety standards as ones bought in the west. carbon monoxide detectors will detect leaking gas.
