It depends on the airline (and the planes they fly in accordance with the FAA). My airline has a policy of 5'8" (shoes off) or shorter. We fly several small airplanes hence the reason.
It is a FAR (FAA Regulation) that you cannot be taller than the plane you are flying as it would hamper evac procedures. It is very much legal. Weight is also an issue because you'd need to move fast an unhampered in an evac situation, although weight is not an FAR.

I don't believe it's legal to have a height limit anymore. Back in the day, they required flight attendants to be below a certain height and also be thin. They were weighed regularly and told to lose weight if they gained a few pounds. I think they did this because they thought if you were too heavy it might make the plane have to work too hard.
I guess if you were a really tall person, it might be difficult for you to do your job, especially on a small plane.
