Formal is for people you show respect to such as your parents, teachers, elders (it tends to be anyone older than you from a different generation) and anyone you just met. Informal is the way you speak to your close friends, children, (and younger family members). Informal in English is called colloquial language.

Usted is formal,
Tú is informal.

Formal references are made to peopel you are not aquainted with or people who are your superiors. Teachers, Bosses, Clergy ect. In that case the "Usted" form of the verb is used. In the informal situation you use the "Tu" form of the verb for friends family and children etc.

Forms of formal address take the 3rd person. Formal address is used when speaking to authority figures, strangers or out of respect for elders.
Informal address takes the 2nd person, and is used with family members and close associates. Adults use the second person when speaking with children.

First person singular = "Yo"
Second person singular = "Tu"
Third person singular = "Usted", "El", and "La"

First person plural = "Nosotros"
Second person plural = "Vosotros" (not in the Mexican dialect)
Third person plural = "Ellos" "Ellas" "Ustedes"
