Usually video cams come with USB cable and software to do this. The software will control the cam and you select where to start and stop the transfer. The camera will rewind and the transfer will start. It is very slow with USB but much faster with IEEE1394 (firewire) cable if your cam has that output and your computer has that input.

Everyone keeps saying USB, when in most cases it is FIREWIRE.

You'll need a high-speed PC to capture the video, otherwise you may capture choppy video and lost frames. You'll probably need lots of hard drive space too.

Software like Pinnacle 10 or Ulead Video Capture. Those brands usually come with DVD burning software too.
