A year ago i was diagnoised with degentatie disk disease in my L-5 disk and osteoarthtitis, and my doctor suggested to do physical theorpy, multipe medications, excercises. But so far nothing has worked so far. I am in horrible, severve pain. I can't run/jump or do alot of excercise, and even washing and blow drying my hair is really hard for me. I also can't sleep, and am extremly tired every day, and have difficulty sitting in class because my body hurts so much. But the pain isn't only in my back, its everywhere, and none of my family is really trying to get me a doctor right now because my father is having a prostate surgery in febuary. I don't know who to talk to because my family really doesn't notice my in pain. Its even difficult to stand for a short period of time. What should i do? Im starting to get really depressed, and even wishing i would die( alothough i would NEVER commit suicide) But any suggestions? Please serious answers only.
I'm a freshman in highschool, and 14.

Pain is pain, at it doesn't matter what your age is. Pain lasting more than 6 months is chronic pain, and that's a whole idfferent category of pain and a whole different subject.

See a doctor. Your father has a medical problem but so do you, so see a doctor. Period. If you think is might help, talk with your school nurse as an ally in your battle here. But don't let this go on any further. It's your body and you have to live in it.

Of course you're tired every day. Pain take a huge toll on your body in a number of ways. It just makes it so much harder to do everything, and that starts making you more tired. Pain makes it harder to sleep, so of coure it makes you more tired. Chronic pain, in and of itselt, affects a neurotransmistter called seratonin, which is one of a group of such chemicals that affect pain, sleep and mood. So, your depression is tied directly into this as well. Yes, pain causes depression.

You also need to be seen by a rheumatologist, a doctor who specializes in arthritis. You may also need to see an neurologist and then a neurosurgeon, simply because it's neurosurgeons who do spinal surgery, not orthopedic surgeons.

Contact your national arthritis society, foundation, organization or whatever for more support and ideas. That must include being assessed by an occupational therapist and by a physical therapist. You don't need your parent's support to do that, and this may be a way for you to get help in changing your family's minds and having them actually pay attention to your problems as well.

There are no age limits to pain and no age limits to arthritis of any type. But there is always something that can help.

Without knowing your parents, its hard to say what would work. Somehow you need to let them know how much pain you are in. Maybe a way to do this is to go to the school nurse, counselor, or principals office and tell them that you are in too much pain to sit through class and need to go home. They will have to call your parents, and maybe that will break the ice. Your doctor may also not understand your pain. You need to make sure that you tell your parents and the doctor that the pain is intolerable, and that you would almost rather die than face the pain. I hope something works.

I have this disease also hunny. The best relieve without heavy painkillers and all their side affects is cannabis! {hey pot!] I'm very serious but not sure if it is legal in your state. Of course with your age and such I would only medicate in the evenings to help you sleep. The better you get will give you more relieve to your pain. Sleep will make you mentally better and physically better also. You should e-mail or make a copy of your e-mail and give it to your parents. Sometimes us adults tend to get tied up in life and don't listen to our children well enough. I'm sure your parents love you and care but, maybe with your dad's situation their not hearing you well! Please try this because we parents ain't perfect and do tune out sometimes.
Take Care and hang in there!

You'd probably be best to see a chiropractor. It's a slow process, but they really know what they're talking about. I assume you're in the States or somewhere, however, and this probably costs too much, but you should see if you can get to see one at least...it will be very much worth it.
