You probably have a coated tongue in the morning too. The little "oxygen-hating" friends that help you digest your chewed food are having a field-day with the remaining traces of food, drink & mucus in your oral cavaties, since saliva (oxygen-fluid) is reduced during sleeptime. And like all living organisms, they eat and poop.

Their waste mixes with the post nasal drip mentioned above and creates the thicker phlegm you experience: Snot-Sh*t (because natural post nasal drip is not so thick).

Follow the above advice from the other answers every night, remembering to drink eight glasses of water per day and blow your nose before you go to sleep.

As you lie down to sleep your sinuses drain and where can it go?..drain down your throat. Post nasal drip. I get this everymorning. Certain things like milk, forced air heat in your home and not hydrating yourself makes it worse.

And of course smoking and 2nd hand smoke. Drink a ton of clear liquids and get rid of the mucous when you can
