Because lizards aren't mourned as much as humans.
If my lizard AND my brother died, I'd mourn my brother because I love him more than the lizard, and quite frankly, the lizard doesn't care, he's in a better place. I'll bury him in my backyard.

The Christian religion (which is the major influence on western rituals such as you have mentioned) teaches that man is a unique creature with an eternal soul. That soul continues to survive after death, thus the rituals. Plants and animals, while they are "alive", do not have an eternal soul. At death, their live ends. So there are not the same rituals for them. Also why they do not return as "ghost" - they no longer exist.
However, I know of many people who have had funerals, and buried family pets - even in expensive cemeteries. So it is also a reflection of how much love and affection there was for the person, or animal, at the time they died.

The purpose of a funeral or memorial service is to provide some sort of closure for the family of the deceased. It isn't to spend money, though those with more money will do so.
People who are poor are provided a burrial spot by the city in which they reside. Those wishing more, and able to afford it do so on their own.
Military veterans (in the US) are provided a stone or marker by the veteran's administration. These people may choose to accept this or not, as they wish.
The expense of a typical funeral is about $6,000 and up.
Even before this became a cost, rather than something provided by paid professionals, a funeral was performed as a social event. Special people took care of the body, and the service was conducted, as with modern times, to provide closure to the family and friends.

Ceremony has not died out, but it looks different today. Consider ceremonial greetings used today like "What's up?" or "Hey." There seem to be ritualized forms of communication taking place with text messaging and emails. Think about the way most young people celebrate their 16th birthday by taking a driving test and their 21st birthday by getting drunk. Christmas may be commercialized, but isn't going to the mall to see Santa still a ritual? What about watching fireworks on the 4th of July? Staying up until midight on New Year's Eve? As for fashion, think about how "preps," "hippies," "punks," or "jocks" dress. They all follow a pattern. There are many more examples, which I'm sure you can think of, too.

The reason for the ceremony is for the persons that are grieving. The person that you are burying is not in the body you are putting in the grave.
He has left His body, that is why we call it dead.
If He knew the Lord, he is in heaven the moment he dies.
The services are to help the grieving deal with the death.

Memorial services are held for the benefit of those who grieve. If a loved one does not desire to have a funeral service, there doesn't have to be a service.

Honoring the dead has been traditional in all cultures from the beginning of time and you want to "advise society to stop it."
This is on your say so....come on.

Native americans as well as others believe these things have souls (trees, dogs, etc) and they prey for them...
Christians do not believe these things (trees, dogs, etc) have souls, therefore they do not prey for them when they die.

Just because "society" does those things doesn't mean you have to. Do whatever you want, as long as it's not illegal.
