You might find these lenses reviewed at either http://www.popphoto.com/lensIndex/
or http://www.kenrockwell.com

In fact, here you go:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tamron/18200.htm
I don't find a review at Rockwell for the Sigma.

There are 3 reviews at B&H Photo.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=389308&is=REG&addedTroughType=search#goto_itemInfo Click on the green boxes that say "Customer Review." I'm sending you there for the reviews, since it is applicable, and not as a sales promotion.

The homework I did suggested that the Sigma was the slightly better lens. I bought the Tamron anyway as when I went to the shop (Australia) The Tamron was a lot cheaper. I am not unhappy with it.

My other Tamron lens (70-300) has really bad purple fringe, haven't used this one a lot yet but it seems OK so far.

I did a side by side shoot with a Nikon 28-200 on the weekend. We were on a boat photographing other boats. There were a few more autofocus misses than I would have liked but both cameras suffered about the same.

For the price not bad lenses either of them. Either way I think you will be OK.

I have repaired Tamron Di Lenses and I really like them. Of course, I am a repair technician, not a photographer. I like Tamron because I know the individuals that run the service centers and sub-contractors. They are very knowledgable and very helpful toward the technicians. Some of these lenses are very difficult to adjust to their exact specifications. Their tollerances are very tight and some of their lenses offer the best resolution I have ever seen.

Resolution isn't everything though. Part of it is the color and contrast of the image (I'm getting way too deep for your answer).

Just know that Tamron makes some really good lenses and they are very highly organized.

Sigma... not so much on the organized. In fact the American CEO was charged recently for defrauding the company of large amounts of money to take his mistress out to Atlantic City.

Their parts are all screwed up too. I've ordered the same part 3 times trying to get the correct part and I never got the same or correct part any of these 3 times (depsite using their parts list and the part number provided).

Of course, that's just the American side of these companies... I guess that doesn't matter too much considering they aren't manufactured in the US.

I don't know much about either one but when shopping for camera equipment, I check amazon.com and shopping.com just to get some customer reviews of the lenses (they can be brutally honest). Also make sure that the lens you buy is compatible with your camera. Sometimes there are glitches between third party lenses and cameras. I have a Canon 20d and my Sigma lens no longer works with it.

i might elect the canon in a heartbeat. i've got in comparison the two mfrs previously and the canon merely felt like a some distance better high quality lens. The Tamron felt slightly flimsy. And "IS" is astounding and could in general make up for the slightly decreased aperture while in comparison with the Tam. The Tam is probable no longer sharp at 2.8. With "IS", you will get effectively 2-3 extra stops of shutter, better than making up for the slightly swifter aperture of the Tam.
