Calm down!

There are a lot of people around who want you to jump onto the global warming band wagon.

Their problem is, if they tell you the truth and say something like...

"Global warming isn't actually going to be that bad. Since cold weather kills around ten times more people than warm weather, and warm weather and more CO2 is good for plants so we'll have more and cheaper food - in fact, we're probably going to be better off!"

...would you be taking a running leap onto their bandwagon? Probably not, right?

But if they say something like...

"Global warming is going to be an absolute catastrophe, we are reaching a tipping point in the climate and then the climate change will be irreversible. Sea levels will rise 100 metres and 90% of the land will be under water. All life on planet Earth will die out and it will mean the end of human civilisation"

...now *THAT* makes you sit up and listen, doesn't it!!!

Of course, it's not actually true, but most people will believe anything they're told, so that doesn't matter.

Trust me, there is no looming catastrophe. It's going to be ok. Calm down and don't believe the hype!

Due to global warming... not sure... I think there are too many other factors involved, such as an exponentially growing population of people.

I think we're building towards a critical point where population density, lack of natural resources, and global warming will make living here on Earth a very difficult and painful thing and to that end I think that we will also have more and more wars and violence as space gets squeezed across the globe and people being people tend to disagree with each other.

Also as developping nations continue to develop, the demand for energy, cars and other things will increase, so that will accelerate global warming unless the demand is met through ecologically sound and friendly methods.

What those methods are is really anybody's guess.

The earth also apparently goes through hot and cold periods. There have been at least 3 Ice Ages and there have also been exceptionally warm periods during Earth's history.

The other aspect to your question is... what exactly do you mean by the Earth? Do you mean human civilization or do you mean the planet itself?

As far as human civilization... I give it between 200 and another 2,000 years depending on the number of factors to thin population, spread it to other planets or even undersea colonies, and effective use of resources.

As for the planet... well I think it will be around at least another 65 million years. After all, Venus is in an extreme state of Global Warming and it's still there... of course we haven't found any life there so does that qualify as being there? It's physically there... but since there's no life there, does it matter?

This question doesn't make sense. The earth will be here whether there is global warming or not. Do you mean how long before humans have left due global warming? A long while because people will always improvise when necessary.

For Humans > More time than I have > I hope!
If the scientists are proved wrong which as far as I can see they aren't going to be! I've noticed weather changes over the last 56 years myself. Sorry MissT but if you think this is cold there's more to come or should be! It's been very mild temperature wise for early winter!
What worries me more is the possibility of some idiot really starting WW3 and it will be Truly Global. That is far more likely in the next 40 years! The only way it could be prevented is to accept our differences (especially race and religion) and become a Global Community but I dont expect to live to see that happen either.
The earth will survive long after we are gone! Its been through it all before and the only thing that will destroy it is the sun!

Global warming cannot and will not destroy the Earth...it may result in the death and extinction of many living creatures, including human beings...but the Earth will be here for a very long time!

The earth doesn't really care about global warming. Humanity on the other hand will probably evolve over coming millenia so who knows.,

despite what evidence is growing; global warming caused by human pollution is still not proven, and may possibly never be.
